HOW FAST CAN YOU SELL MY BOAT?

We cannot predict when a boat will sell, but we can help you sell it faster. Clean boats are in high demand, and there are two main categories by which a buyer will judge your boat: cosmetics and mechanics. Please consider these points...

COSMETICS

All exterior surfaces must be clean and shine. Fiberglass and metal should sparkle. Don't forget windows, and especially portlights and hatches.

Paint the bottom and put a fresh coat of varnish or Cetol on all brightwork.

Enclosures and canvas should be in good shape. Damaged goods should be repaired, replaced or removed.

Clean dirty shorepower cables, and take a good look at the condition of your docklines.

Shampoo the carpet, or replace if necessary, and have the drapes and bunk covers cleaned.

Clear out all unnecessary clutter and gear. If it's not intended to convey, remove it.

Clean out drawers and stowage bins. Place a scented clothes dryer sheet in the lockers to remove stale odors.  Febreze works well.  Remove old spices, canned goods, liquor, paper plates, cups, koozies, napkins and the like. If in doubt, throw it out!

Clean oven, burner top, microwave and the refrigerator.

Pump out the holding tank.

Pump out the shower sump to eliminate the sour water smell.

The bilge must be spotless. Use oilsorb pads under machinery. Clean, prime and paint the engines and generator.

Clean out debris in hatch bindings and scuppers.

MECHANICAL

All systems should be in working order. Many owners, for example, will continue to operate the bilge pumps in manual mode after the auto-float switch quits. They might not care, but a prospective buyer will. Everything has to work.

Ensure that all gauges and alarms function properly.

Replace worried-looking hoses and clamps.

Clean out raw water strainers.

Change oil and fuel filters.

Have the boat fully fueled and ready for a thorough sea trial with short notice. This will also diminish the risk of having condensation in the fuel tanks.  Make arrangements to have the bottom cleaned by a diver before the sea trial and survey.

Prepare a list of spares and extra equipment, such as props, shafts and filters and note their location.

Gather all paperwork for mechanical systems together and store it in a binder. Have the maintenance records organized and handy.

Don't worry, First Light Yacht Sales will be with you every step of the way!
